Somehow, it’s not surprising that our nation’s capital has some of the country’s most expensive colleges and universities–think George Washington University. The good news is, you can still find affordable colleges in Washington, DC. The pickings may be slimmer than in some other states, but you can still go to college in Washington, DC without going broke.

One of the most affordable colleges in Washington, DC is the University of the District of Colombia. This is the only public university that is fully accredited in Washington, DC and offers a range of degree programs for those seeking a bachelor’s or master’s level education. If you decide to attend this school, you can choose from the degree programs offered through the following:

  • The College of Arts and Sciences
  • The School of Business and Public Administration
  • The School of Engineering and Applied Sciences
  • The David A. Clarke School of Law

Undergraduate resident tuition for the University of the District of Columbia is $265.83 per credit. If you’re taking 12 or more credits, you can expect to pay $3499.96 per semester. If you’re from the metro area, your tuition would be $337.50 per credit and $4000 for a semester of 12 or more credits. Non-residents pay considerably more, with tuition coming in at $587.50 per credit and $7000 per semester.

You can also take classes through the university’s community college–the Community College of the District of Columbia, which opened in 2009. It offers a selection of associate’s degree and certificate programs from which you can choose. It also offers more than 25 workforce development programs. You can go to this college for $100 per credit or $1200 per semester for 12 or more credits.

As far as other affordable colleges in Washington, DC are concerned, Gallaudet University isn’t as cheap as many would like, but it may be affordable for those who are able to secure some decent scholarships. If you’re a United States citizen or a permanent resident of this country, you can go to this college for $5425.00 per semester. International students pay more. This school focuses on providing a quality college education to students who are hearing as well as for those who are deaf or hard of hearing.
